"Missing hard real-time capabilities as well as safety issues always used to limit the adoption of Linux in certain embedded applications. With ELinOS Real-Time, we enable customers to overcome that limitation and deploy Embedded Linux even in hard real-time and safety critical environments", says Detlev Schaadt, CTO of SYSGO. ELinOS Real-Time is built on SYSGO's separation microkernel-based real-time operating system for safety and mission critical systems, PikeOS. The incorporated Embedded Linux resides in a dedicated partition (address space and I/O protected area) on top of the microkernel, thus in user space. To implement real-time tasks, ELinOS Real-Time offers a PSE51 POSIX profile (single process, multi-threaded). Each POSIX task resides also in its own dedicated partition, so Linux is not able to interfere with the execution of a real-time application.
Hanging in Derrick Copeland's Technology Drive office is a framed newspaper article about Applied Data Trends. It includes a photo of Copeland sitting at his desk, holding his daughter, Amelia, then 3 months old. Such a scene was common in those days, in 1998, when many of the then-3-year-old firm's 45 staffers worked mostly from computers set up in their homes. Today, ADT fills the third floor of Technology Place near Cummings Research Park. The work force has more than doubled, reaching 100 employees this year. ADT was named Small Business of the Year in the Technology category by the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce last year. In August, Copeland was named Entrepreneur of the Year by the chamber. Copeland now has a corner office, complete with a conference table and projector screen, but the photo and article on the wall remind him of what's most important: enjoying what you do.
US corporate profits in China passed $2 billion the first six months of 2006, up more than 50% from the first half of last year, according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. US companies are on pace to earn more in China this year than they earned there during the entire 1990s, notes Joseph Quinlan, chief market strategist at Bank of America. .
A fight over which state agency should regulate modular homes -- considered by many the quickest way to replace the thousands of hurricane-destroyed homes -- has been temporarily resolved with an attorney general's opinion placing regulatory authority with the state contractors licensing board. The argument pits the Louisiana State Contractors Licensing Board against the Louisiana Manufacturing Housing Commission. Modular homes are factory-built structures that are delivered to a lot in components and assembled into a permanent home either on a slab or a raised foundation. Manufactured homes are built on metal chassis with wheels and hauled to the home site in one piece. They are also called mobile homes or trailer homes. While the wheels can be removed and the chassis mounted or tied to a foundation, the law still considers the structure moveable.
