Modular, boxlike homes with add-on porches, changing roof designs and floor plans, and - most importantly - quick assembly. That's the idea behind grant proposals Louisiana submitted to federal officials to replace the cramped quarters of FEMA travel trailers for residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina and the victims of future disasters. The nation's five Gulf Coast states are competing for a pool of $400 million to test and build alternative housing for hurricane victims, a pilot program FEMA hopes can become a model for how to provide fast, temporary or semipermanent housing after the next tornado in Nebraska, earthquake in Hawaii or hurricane in Louisiana. "Louisiana wants housing for disaster victims. FEMA wants to look at options for future disasters," said Jeff Hebert, the Louisiana Recovery Authority's deputy director of planning who worked on the state's alternative housing grant proposal.
Aerojet has launched from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. aboard a Boeing Company Delta II rocket. STEREO consists of two nearly identical satellites launched aboard a single rocket to provide three-dimensional measurements of the Sun's near surface region for studying coronal mass ejections. In addition to the spacecraft propulsion systems, Aerojet provided the second stage engine for the Delta II rocket and a small thruster aboard the rocket's third stage. Aerojet has supported more than 250 Delta launches with the Company's second stage rocket engines with 100 percent mission success. Aerojet has also provided spacecraft propulsion systems for many space missions, including NASA's Advanced Composition Explorer, Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous, Mercury MESSENGER, and Pluto New Horizons.
WASHINGTON -- In response to the growing interest in panelized construction for custon homes, the Building Systems Councils of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has published a free booket entitled: Panelized Homes: Custom Designs, Your Building Solution. The full-color, 12-page booklet introduces consumers to energy- and resource-efficient panelized home building, highlighting features and benefits and offering tips for choosing the right type of panelized home. "In addition to being an excellent resource for consumers, this new publication helps builders explain to their clients the innovative panelized home choices now available," said NAHB President David Pressly, a home builder in Statesville, N.C. Panelized home building systems combine the best aspects of traditional onsite, stick-built construction with modern technology to deliver a well-designed home in less time.

Thanks to a phone call from a local taxi cab driver, a convicted sexual offender that had reportedly fled from Okeechobee County late last week is back in jail. Detective Shane Altman, of the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office (OCSO), said Robert Robedeau was arrested around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday by Deputy Rick Gonzalez of the Osceola County Sheriff's Office. He is being held in the Osceola County Jail without bond, and will be returned to Okeechobee County at a later date. Robedeau, 25, was arrested at the Continental Inn Motel in Kissimmee on a warrant. It was unclear whether he was arrested on an Okeechobee County warrant charging him with failure to notify, or a Department of Corrections (DOC) warrant that charged him with absconding. Registered sexual offenders are required to notify law enforcement if they are moving or leaving the county.
Prosecutors say a former Miami-Dade Water and Sewer employee took $1 million of the county's money before he was fired in a cellphone scandal. BY JACK DOLAN jdolan@MiamiHherald.com Police are seeking a former county Water and Sewer mailroom supervisor who is accused of indulging his taste for expensive German cars with $1 million stolen from taxpayers. Charles Anthony Vance, who was fired late last month for his role in a separate scandal involving millions paid by the department in unauthorized cellphone expenses, is now accused of stealing money earmarked for bulk mailing. ''The two cases are unrelated,'' said Miami-Dade County Inspector General Chris Mazzella, whose office handled the investigation. ``It's another unfortunate instance where there was a lack of sufficient oversight on some rather huge amounts of money.'' Vance could not be reached for comment.
