  Manufactured vs. modular

October is Manufactured Housing Month in Mississippi, according to a recent press release from the Manufactured Housing Association in Flowood. The release went on to say that one out of every three Mississippi housing starts in the first six months of the year was a manufactured home.

With so many manufactured homes sold in the state, there is no doubt the industry fills a need. But the volume of manufactured homes sold may help explain why so many people confuse them with modular construction.

Emily Austill said she got a permit and financing for her modular home in Perkinston. But after the home was delivered and while finishing work was taking place, a neighbor protested her right to have the home, believing it to be manufactured. Austill said work has stopped on the home until the misunderstanding can be rectified.

News in brief:

The father died on the spot, his son sustained serious injuries to his legs. He was transported to the hospital in the village of Kurta.

On October 26 Georgian Speaker of Parliament Nino Burjanadze thanked the Czech Republic for its support in Georgia's aspirations to join NATO when meeting with Prshemisl Sobotko, Chairman of Czech Senate.
"Your support occurred at a time of crucial importance for moving Georgia to the phase of Intensified Dialogue with NATO", Burjanadze stated. She also expressed her hopes that the Georgian-Czech relations would developed at both bilateral and multilateral international levels in the future.
Prshemisl Sobotka positively evaluated the aspiration of Georgia to join NATO.

Slowdown prompts modular home company layoffs

CLAREMONT, N.H. The housing slowdown in New England has prompted a modular home company in Claremont (New Hampshire) to lay off workers and close one plant.

Customized Structures Incorporated laid off 23 of its 200 employees and will close a factory in the city. C-E-O Richard Krant said the company will operate entirely out of a second plant in Claremont.

With the number of building permits and new homes dropping, Krant said the company had to make adjustments.
