  Hopefuls discuss issues

More than 60 people listened to candidates discuss issues ranging from gay marriage to county roads at a forum Thursday.

The candidates for 118th District state representative, presiding commissioner and associate judge spoke at the Sedalia Municipal Building.

The candidates for the 118th District state representatives are Democrat Jerry Beck and Republican Stan Cox.

"Our government officials have forgotten that they make life-and-death decisions for us every day," Mr. Beck said. He would work to return benefits to the veterans, the elderly and disabled, and to improve the lives of taxpayers, he said.

Mr. Beck, 67, of La Monte, is a retired owner of a manufacturing company. As the state representative, he would work all year long, "not just from January to May."

He plans to promote agricultural and manufacturing goods around the world, and wants to find grants to help fund local government projects to ease the burden on taxpayers, he said.

Manufactured vs. modular

October is Manufactured Housing Month in Mississippi, according to a recent press release from the Manufactured Housing Association in Flowood. The release went on to say that one out of every three Mississippi housing starts in the first six months of the year was a manufactured home.

With so many manufactured homes sold in the state, there is no doubt the industry fills a need. But the volume of manufactured homes sold may help explain why so many people confuse them with modular construction.

Emily Austill said she got a permit and financing for her modular home in Perkinston. But after the home was delivered and while finishing work was taking place, a neighbor protested her right to have the home, believing it to be manufactured. Austill said work has stopped on the home until the misunderstanding can be rectified.

Petra Haden Kicks Off Tiny Tour

Remember that kick-ass a capella rendition of "God Only Knows" that we posted as part of the first installment of our Infinite Mixtape series? Well, Petra Haden-- former Decemberist, Jack Black's sister-in-law, violinist extraordinaire, buddy to Mike Watt, and daughter of one of the most bad-ass/coked-up- looking bass players of all time-- is the woman behind it, and now she's taking her a capella show on the road for five East Coast dates. According to a press release, Haden and the Sell-Outs-- her "10-piece (nine backing vocalists + Petra), all-female choir that the former That Dog vocalist/violinist assembled to recreate her a capella tour de forces"-- begin the de force-ing tonight in Pittsburgh and end before Halloween at Buffalo's Soundlab. Expect live versions of tunes from 2005's Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out, which is, yes, Haden giving the entire classic Who album the a capella treatment.

Letters to the Editor

Hardly a week goes by where one of the Churches is traveling miles to Katrina. To help repair the damage down there. They are doing it in the name of Jesus to show Christian love; spending their own money helping people they don't even know.

There is one couple, which bought a modular home some fifteen years ago.

The couple that they bought the home from put it in the wrong place on their property. For all the winters there has been- water under their house since the wrong placement. (Now they need a permanent cement foundation to go around the whole house to stop the water.) To the homeowners surprise the owners they bought the house from where the same church sales people went. The owner did as the Bible said to do and went to the Church to get the problem fixed. The Leaders didn't want to get involved.
