Boynton G. Hagaman, 88; Engineer Designed Antennas

Boynton Glenn Hagaman, 88, a self-taught engineer who designed antennas that allowed the Navy to communicate with Polaris missile submarines and who invented the first tachometer that gave physicians an instant way to measure patients' heart rates, died of a heart attack Oct. 20 at his Alexandria home.

The very low frequency, or VLF, antennas that Mr. Hagaman designed helped submarine crews navigate and communicate using the Omega navigation system, the predecessor of satellite-controlled global positioning systems. His antennas were built all over the world, including in Norway, India, Australia and the United Kingdom. One of the first, a horn-style antenna that was more than 900 feet long, was constructed in the early 1950s near La Plata.

Letters to the Editor

Hardly a week goes by where one of the Churches is traveling miles to Katrina. To help repair the damage down there. They are doing it in the name of Jesus to show Christian love; spending their own money helping people they don't even know.

There is one couple, which bought a modular home some fifteen years ago.

The couple that they bought the home from put it in the wrong place on their property. For all the winters there has been- water under their house since the wrong placement. (Now they need a permanent cement foundation to go around the whole house to stop the water.) To the homeowners surprise the owners they bought the house from where the same church sales people went. The owner did as the Bible said to do and went to the Church to get the problem fixed. The Leaders didn't want to get involved.

UK. Lloyd's Register Group Executive Chairman reports on year 2006 ...

I am very pleased to be able to report that Group income in 2006 rose by a very healthy 14% to 425m. Of the 53m increase over the previous year, 41m resulted from organic growth, with the balance coming from six acquisitions, which I refer to later. The operating surplus, before charitable donations, was 30.0m (2005: 25.3m). After charitable donations of 6.1m (2005: 5.2m), operating profit was 23.9m (2005: 20.1m), giving an operating margin of 5.6% (2005: 5.4%). In the following paragraphs, I comment on trading in each of our businesses and on the non-trading elements of the profit and loss account. Marine revenue increased by 16%. Our share of the world fleet now stands at 18.1% in terms of gross tonnage, a similar position to a year ago. Over 11 million gross tonnes (mgt) came into the Lloyds Register classed fleet, which now stands at 128.4 mgt, yet another record in our history.

Miss. competing for housing funds

Mississippi's weary Gulf Coast officially entered a race last week.

If it wins, thousands of residents who have been living in cramped travel trailers for more than a year could be settling into modular homes. And the Coast would become the testing ground for new types of emergency housing.

Mississippi is competing with four other Gulf Coast states for $400 million to test and build alternative housing for hurricane victims.

The deadline for the application to the Federal Emergency Management Agency was Friday. FEMA hopes the program can provide a model for replacing the much-derided travel trailers it currently uses to house disaster victims.

Scott Hereford of Waveland is growing weary of the trailer he moved into about a year ago. "It's kind of like a jail cell; it gets smaller every day," said Hereford of his approximately 200-square-foot trailer.

Local fireman's bravery earns state and local recognition

Volunteer fireman Mike Shrout risks his life to help others because that's what he does, not for the glory that follows.

During an open house held during Fire Safety Week in Fulton, Shrout was presented with the State Fire Marshals Lifesaving Award and an Award of Valor - two of the highest recognitions a fireman can receive.Shrout doesn't believe his actions deserve special honor. Following the presentation, the 25-year fire veteran said, “The award means a lot to me, but I don't feel I did anything that any other firefighter would not have done. That's what we do."Shrout was recommended for the awards for the “selfless action" he took this March in saving the life of a Fulton woman, who was trapped in the basement of her collapsed, tornado-ravaged home.According to Central Fire District Protection reports, the newly built modular home was lifted off its foundation and had caved in and split in two with homeowner Joyce King trapped under the debris. Her husband Lawrence - who had escaped and crawled to a neighbor's house for help - also was injured.

Commission calls for study of aging North Hall library

Hall County commissioners Thursday gave the go-ahead to conduct a study on the feasibility of constructing a new library in North Hall.

District 1 Commissioner Deborah Lynn brought the proposal to the Hall County Board of Commissioners at its Thursday meeting.

Lynn, who has worked with the Hall County Library System for the past two years, attended a library board meeting earlier this week at the Clermont branch for the first time.

"While I feel like the people and the town of Clermont have stepped up to bat for Hall County to have a facility there, when I walked in, there were a lot of concerns on my part," Lynn said. "I didn't feel like this was the way Hall County needed to be represented. I think there's some liability there."

Lynn said the inside of the library recently had been painted but that there were several rotted areas, peeled-up flooring and leaky ceilings.

Nationwide unveils center, new log homes

Nationwide Custom Homes is hoping a new Design Center, combined with the introduction of a new series of log homes, will offer home builders more options and create more jobs.

Nationwide has a $12.8 million annual payroll in Virginia and 425 employees in Martinsville, according to U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode, R-Rocky Mount, who attended the company's ceremony Friday.

Goode said if the company grows as it hopes and hires an additional 100 employees, the annual payroll would rise by another $2.5 million.

“We are bursting with pride at what we've got to present today and you did it," Nationwide President Tony Watson told employees gathered for the announcement.

“Hopefully, this will give us the tools we need to expand and add more employees" at the facility at 1100 Rives Road, Watson said.
