The global cable TV industry is being shaken by "seismic shifts" as the main players enter a race to offer "three-screen" services combining high-definition TV, broadband-connected PCs and mobile phones. "The cable TV industry is working diligently to connect all the infrastructure dots in the race to provision a three-screen telecoms service," said In-Stat analyst Gerry Kaufhold. "Fixed/mobile convergence will become a fast growing market for cable operators, and they will disrupt the cell phone industry." According to the new In-Stat report, cable TV infrastructure equipment sales will rise from about $925m during 2006 to more than $2.1bn in 2010. The study found that the cable TV industry is rapidly deploying VoIP services, and that modular cable modem termination systems and wide band cable modems are being used to upgrade high speed data services to compete against telcos' ADSL, VDSL and fibre-to-the-home.
