Northeast Landing targets 'middle-of-road' home buyers

Local builder Joseph E. Rhodes Jr. made his name on the Outer Banks. But the Elizabeth City native says Pasquotank County is the place to be.

Rhodes is in the process of building a 49-home residential development off Northside Road, near Main Street Extended. The development, called Northeast Landing, is funded by a group of Outer Banks investors, Prairie Dog LLC, whose managing partner is William Rowland Thorp.

Some of the projects Rhodes has finished on the Outer Banks include the Pelican Watch subdivision, just north of the Kitty Hawk Pier, Grace Lutheran Church in Nags Head, the animal hospital in Manteo, and several custom waterfront homes.

But as the market on the Outer Banks starts to flatten out, Rhodes says he's contemplating a move back home.

Mooresville using portable classrooms

North Madison Elementary School in Mooresville has seen significant growth in students over the last several years so much so, in fact, that the school is now using portable classrooms to accommodate the overflow.

The portable classrooms, which sit just outside of the elementary school, were installed several years ago because of projected growth in the area, but had not been used until this year, Mooresville Consolidated School Corporation superintendent Curt Freeman said.

We knew that potentially wed be using them some day, he said.

The classrooms are like a modular home and are transported on a semi-truck to the school in two halves. They are placed on a laid foundation near the school but are not attached to the building, Freeman said.

They look like little houses, sitting out behind the school, he said.

Church bought single mom of two a new home

After Hurricane Rita blitzed her Texas home a year ago, a single mom's faith in God was strengthened when the First Baptist Church in Bermuda bought her a new home on the same parcel of land.

While the country was still gaping at Katrina's devastation of New Orleans, falling trees blown about by category three Rita's fierce winds sweeping in from the Gulf of Mexico and causing $10 billion in damage in the Houston area were smashing Belinda (B) Lopez's Mauriceville house and furniture.

Stunned, she remembers thinking: "How am I going to afford to buy a new house?"

She didn't know how much the insurance was going to give back to purchase a new home for her and sons Austin, 11, and Dallas, 10.

"Being a single mom with two kids how do you do this?" she agonized.

Commission calls for study of aging North Hall library

Hall County commissioners Thursday gave the go-ahead to conduct a study on the feasibility of constructing a new library in North Hall.

District 1 Commissioner Deborah Lynn brought the proposal to the Hall County Board of Commissioners at its Thursday meeting.

Lynn, who has worked with the Hall County Library System for the past two years, attended a library board meeting earlier this week at the Clermont branch for the first time.

"While I feel like the people and the town of Clermont have stepped up to bat for Hall County to have a facility there, when I walked in, there were a lot of concerns on my part," Lynn said. "I didn't feel like this was the way Hall County needed to be represented. I think there's some liability there."

Lynn said the inside of the library recently had been painted but that there were several rotted areas, peeled-up flooring and leaky ceilings.
