Dress up your outdoor space with wood tiles

Regardless of the size of your home, if it has a patio, deck or balcony, it seems larger. Even if its only large enough for two chairs and a small footstool, this sort of small expansion outside adds immense dimension to any interior living space.

But just having the space isnt enough. It needs to be as warm and inviting as the rest of your home, and this is where some interesting new decking materials come in. Natural stone and terra-cotta or ceramic tiles are excellent choices, but you need to be on the ground floor or make sure you verify that the structure can take the substantial additional weight.

The warmth of natural wood is one of the more finished looks you can elect to use, but the worry about mildew and decay keeps a lot of people from making this selection. Now, however, there is an appealing new concept in modular decking: removable hardwood tiles that snap together.

WIRED NextFest hits the Javits

Wired Magazine's yearly traveling technology shindig, NextFest, plants its roots in NYC this weekend. After starting in San Francisco in 2004 the show finally makes it to NYC. Billed as a WIRED's vision of a new world's fair, here you can "experience more than 130 exhibits from scientists, researchers, and inventors around the globe. WIRED NextFest features innovations in communication, design, entertainment, exploration, health, transportation, security, and green living."

We were able to get an advance sneak preview yesterday. If somehow you had a chance to see last year's event in Chicago, there will be a few items familiar to you. Still, they turned up the interactivity quite a bit, and it's just as exciting show off to your friends.

There is a lot to see at the show, and its less clear floor plan this year might make it easy to miss some cool things.

'China Dream' of US firms - rising profits

US corporate profits in China passed $2 billion the first six months of 2006, up more than 50% from the first half of last year, according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. US companies are on pace to earn more in China this year than they earned there during the entire 1990s, notes Joseph Quinlan, chief market strategist at Bank of America.

Hunterdon freeholder race focused on property taxes, fiscal ...

When campaigning in any of Hunterdon County's 26 towns, candidates for the Board of Freeholders say they have a hard time escaping the one issue gripping residents across the county.

"Taxes are on everyone's mind," said Matthew Holt, a former Clinton Town mayor who is running as a Republican for one of two seats on the board. "I know it sounds like a broken record, but, frankly, that's what you get hit with all the time."

As state lawmakers continue to grapple with ways to reduce the nation's highest property tax rates, Hunterdon candidates are positing their own ideas to alleviate the burden on taxpayers.

Sharing services

Holt and Republican freeholder candidate Ron Sworen, who is currently in his 11th year as the mayor of Frenchtown, say promoting shared services throughout Hunterdon's local governments and school systems is paramount to reducing costs in the county.

Sporting News gets a new publisher

Sporting News announced Monday it named Ed Baker as its new publisher. He replaces Peter Spina, who left the Chesterfield-based sports magazine in mid-September for a position with Active International as senior vice president of sales.

Baker will perform the role while remaining in his current positions as chief marketing officer of American City Business Journals Inc. of Charlotte, N.C., and publisher of Atlanta Business Chronicle. On Sept. 7, American City announced the purchase of Sporting News for an undisclosed amount.

Ralphs Grocery Co. will pay $70 million under a deal OK'd in federal court Monday to settle charges it illegally hired hundreds of workers under fake names during a 2003-2004 grocery strike and lockout. Ralphs, which is owned by Cincinnati-based Kroger Co., locked out employees after Southern California grocery workers voted to strike against Safeway Inc.'s Vons and Pavilions chains.
