St. Joseph breaks ground for center in Jessamine

NICHOLASVILLE - St. Joseph HealthCare broke ground yesterday for its new ambulatory care center in Jessamine County.

"Good care is close care," said Gov. Ernie Fletcher, who attended the groundbreaking at the northeast corner of the U.S. 27 Bypass and Ky. 169. Fletcher, a doctor, is a former president of the St. Joseph Medical Association.

The care center, scheduled to open in 2008, will provide 24-hour emergency services plus diagnostic imaging, including CT scans and X-rays. Laboratory services and space for several doctors' offices will be available.

St. Joseph President and CEO Gene Woods said the need for the facility was clear this past summer when he went to R.J. Corman's annual July 4 fireworks celebration. On the way, Woods saw an ambulance headed toward Lexington.

Klaxons Talk Visa Troubles, Debut Album

Klaxons are in a rush. The British electro-rockers are at the airport in Iceland when Pitchfork catches up with them, heading from a triumphant set at the Iceland Airwaves festival back to a gig in their home country.

"That's pretty much the story of our lives," lead Klaxon Jamie Reynolds says. "We go to the most beautiful places in the world but don't actually get to see them. We just sit in the back of a taxi and then go home."

But the band's hurry isn't just a struggle not to be late. Their music races frantic grooves through candy-colored riffs and comet-chasing synthesizers, and it has propelled the trio to near-instant fame. Despite having only released a few singles in England and an EP (Xan Valleys on Modular) in America, Klaxons have already rocketed to the top of the buzz bin, appearing on the cover of the NME, signing to Polydor, and selling out shows everywhere.

College seeks voter approval of $67.5 million bond

Mendocino College in November will ask voters to approve a $67.5 million bond, which would cost property owners $25 yearly per $100,000 in assessed property value.

In other words, a person with a home assessed at $400,000 would pay $100 a year -- about the cost of a current textbook -- or less than $9 a month.

Twenty-five years ago, the local college filed a master plan with the state to build a Ukiah campus and centers in the Lakeport and Willits areas, according to Ross Beck, director of public information. "Much of that plan is completed with excellent facilities in Ukiah and leased facilities for the two centers. Four permanent buildings, however, still need to be constructed," he said, referring to a new library and a maintenance building on the Ukiah campus, as well as two permanent facilities -- one for the Lakeport campus, and one for the Willits campus, where the college currently leases its centers.

Castanets Tour Europe, Share Video

Raymond Raposa's Castanets will spend the next month or so on a European tour, but they've left a new video for us to puzzle over while they're away. The video for "The Smallest Bones", directed by Ben Piekut and Marie Rossettie, is a small oddity: Raposa sings on the left side of a split screen, the shaky camera allowing his face to go in and out of the frame while a woman does sign language interpretations of the lyrics on the right side.

The split screen also gives the song a clinical feel, like something you'd get on inter-library loan for a research paper. Nevermind that it's a music video ostensibly created for deaf viewers.

"The Smallest Bones" is from Raposa's 2004 album Cathedral, which means Asthmatic Kitty's missed the release date on this one by a dozen or so months.

NAHB Publishes Free Booklet on Panelized Construction for Custom ...

WASHINGTON -- In response to the growing interest in panelized construction for custon homes, the Building Systems Councils of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has published a free booket entitled: Panelized Homes: Custom Designs, Your Building Solution.

The full-color, 12-page booklet introduces consumers to energy- and resource-efficient panelized home building, highlighting features and benefits and offering tips for choosing the right type of panelized home.

"In addition to being an excellent resource for consumers, this new publication helps builders explain to their clients the innovative panelized home choices now available," said NAHB President David Pressly, a home builder in Statesville, N.C.

Panelized home building systems combine the best aspects of traditional onsite, stick-built construction with modern technology to deliver a well-designed home in less time.
