New washers, dryers are ecofriendly money-savers

You re-did the kitchen with professional-grade appliances. Check.

You've outfitted a home theater with a big-screen, high-definition TV and surround-sound system. Double check.

Still, there's one more room in the house that's craving a high-tech makeover with a state-of-the-art, high-efficiency "system."

The laundry room.

Long hidden away in dank basements or cold garages, the laundry is being relocated to more visible and accessible spots as a place of honor and excitement.

"Walk into a new model home, and you'll find the laundry located next to the kitchen, as part of the family/home theater room, or set up in the baby's room," noted Jill Notini, spokeswoman for the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers.

Making these moves possible is a growing crop of high-tech clothes washers and dryers boasting dramatic styling and high-efficiency (HE) operation.

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — A bill that would have changed the residency requirements for Navajo presidential and vice presidential candidates did not receive enough votes to stay alive.

The vote count was 36 in favor and 33 opposed during Thursday's Navajo Nation Council fall session. Since the proposed bill would have made changes to Navajo codes, the bill needed 59 votes to pass.

Local Council delegates Pete Atcitty, Wallace Charley and Richard Begaye all voted in favor of the measure. Delegates LoRenzo Bates and Ervin Keeswood voted against the measure.

According to Title 2 and 11 of the Navajo Nation codes, Navajo presidential and vice presidential candidates must have permanently lived within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation for at least three years.

Revolution hailed but City warned of a looming fight for supremacy

It was 20 years ago today, and Britain was facing groundbreaking change. The Australian soap Neighbours stormed the nation's television screens, the BBC launched its One O'Clock News programme - and the City of London was rocked by "Big Bang".

Electronic trading systems were switched on and the secluded cabal of privately owned firms that dominated City share dealing was smashed. The old-fashioned way of dealing, head to head on a sweaty trading floor in the stock exchange, was halted overnight.

Insider: Base Stations Drive Wireless Economics

New technology such as WiMax and user trends such as increased wireless data downloads are changing the nature of base-station design, according to the latest research from the Unstrung Insider. The new report -- 3G Base Station Design & Wireless Network Economics -- highlights the steady evolution of a new breed of "faster, cheaper, smaller" base stations.

"With an emphasis on increasing data throughput for both 3G and WiMax, speed is certainly being addressed," writes the report's author, Simon Swales. "There is also a trend towards smaller base stations, with the idea of a zero-footprint base station gaining interest."

These design concepts are gaining ground over previous, monolithic designs because the mobile operators that use the infrastructure are facing increasing costs associated with deploying cell sites.
