  Manufactured vs. modular

October is Manufactured Housing Month in Mississippi, according to a recent press release from the Manufactured Housing Association in Flowood. The release went on to say that one out of every three Mississippi housing starts in the first six months of the year was a manufactured home.

With so many manufactured homes sold in the state, there is no doubt the industry fills a need. But the volume of manufactured homes sold may help explain why so many people confuse them with modular construction.

Emily Austill said she got a permit and financing for her modular home in Perkinston. But after the home was delivered and while finishing work was taking place, a neighbor protested her right to have the home, believing it to be manufactured. Austill said work has stopped on the home until the misunderstanding can be rectified.

2 modular home plants proposed for east N.O.

A startup modular home company called Premier Designed Homes wants to spend $1 billion building two eastern New Orleans manufacturing plants, creating 2,500 jobs and the ability to build as many as 63 homes per week, the company said Friday.

If the project gets off the ground, Premier would be the first factory to produce modular homes in the city. And the one-two punch of creating homes to help displaced residents return to New Orleans and jobs to employ them would be a major boost for the city's economy.

Mayor Ray Nagin, touring a Premier shotgun Friday at a building exposition at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, said he was "thrilled" at the development and its potential for the city.

"It's huge," Nagin said. "We've got several companies considering these types of plants here.

Presidential residency bill fails at Navajo Council

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — A bill that would have changed the residency requirements for Navajo presidential and vice presidential candidates did not receive enough votes to stay alive.

The vote count was 36 in favor and 33 opposed during Thursday's Navajo Nation Council fall session. Since the proposed bill would have made changes to Navajo codes, the bill needed 59 votes to pass.

Local Council delegates Pete Atcitty, Wallace Charley and Richard Begaye all voted in favor of the measure. Delegates LoRenzo Bates and Ervin Keeswood voted against the measure.

According to Title 2 and 11 of the Navajo Nation codes, Navajo presidential and vice presidential candidates must have permanently lived within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation for at least three years.

Legislation 0565-06 would have stricken the residency requirements for the candidates completely, according to the proposed legislation.

Local fireman's bravery earns state and local recognition

Volunteer fireman Mike Shrout risks his life to help others because that's what he does, not for the glory that follows.

During an open house held during Fire Safety Week in Fulton, Shrout was presented with the State Fire Marshals Lifesaving Award and an Award of Valor - two of the highest recognitions a fireman can receive.Shrout doesn't believe his actions deserve special honor. Following the presentation, the 25-year fire veteran said, “The award means a lot to me, but I don't feel I did anything that any other firefighter would not have done. That's what we do."Shrout was recommended for the awards for the “selfless action" he took this March in saving the life of a Fulton woman, who was trapped in the basement of her collapsed, tornado-ravaged home.According to Central Fire District Protection reports, the newly built modular home was lifted off its foundation and had caved in and split in two with homeowner Joyce King trapped under the debris. Her husband Lawrence - who had escaped and crawled to a neighbor's house for help - also was injured.

MIKE DAVIS FEAR AND MONEY IN DUBAI

‘As your jet starts its descent, you are glued to your window. The scene below is astonishing: a 24-square-mile archipelago of coral-coloured islands in the shape of an almost-finished puzzle of the world. In the shallow green waters between continents, the sunken shapes of the Pyramids of Giza and the Roman Colosseum are clearly visible. In the distance, three other large island groups are configured as palms within crescents and planted with high-rise resorts, amusement parks and a thousand mansions built on stilts over the water. The ‘Palms' are connected by causeways to a Miami-like beachfront crammed with mega-hotels, apartment skyscrapers and yachting marinas.

‘As the plane slowly banks toward the desert mainland, you gasp at the even more improbable vision ahead. Out of a chrome forest of skyscrapers soars a new Tower of Babel.

GREENTrend could take root in RoanokeBuilding

Hoping to spark a "green" building wave, Roanoke's C2C Home tentatively plans to start construction of its first environmentally friendly house in November.

Construction on the house, in the 400 block of Harrison Avenue in Northwest Roanoke, was to begin more than a year ago.

But C2C Home officials said the experimental project hit several snags: a hoped-for building material lacked a patent; a firm that created one of the designs disbanded; some designs proved too impractical to be built here; few of the designers have the skills to produce precise construction plans; and construction costs proved too high.

During the past year, C2C Home also has converted from an all-volunteer effort to a nonprofit, recruited a board of directors, drawn up plans for several more houses, solicited donations of cash, building materials and in-kind labor and helped inform local builders and buyers about sustainable building.
