Q: Can You Taste the Color Red?

A: Oddly enough, even though most of us can't even imagine what it would be like to taste music or smell the color red, those with synesthesia can and do that every day. Just as the word anesthesia means "no sensation," synesthesia means "joined sensation." For some reason, stimulating one sense will trigger perceptions in another sense.

For example, a bright light might seem loud, the sound of a bagpipe sour, the color after sex a static silver. No one's quite sure of the cause, but there are a few hypotheses. Some experts think that crossed wires in the brain cause the problem (the path to the taste buds gets hooked up to the sense of hearing path, for example), while others believe it's due to a lack of inhibition (when the natural pathways that squelch irrelevant sensory input just aren't working properly).

New washers, dryers are ecofriendly money-savers

You re-did the kitchen with professional-grade appliances. Check.

You've outfitted a home theater with a big-screen, high-definition TV and surround-sound system. Double check.

Still, there's one more room in the house that's craving a high-tech makeover with a state-of-the-art, high-efficiency "system."

The laundry room.

Long hidden away in dank basements or cold garages, the laundry is being relocated to more visible and accessible spots as a place of honor and excitement.

"Walk into a new model home, and you'll find the laundry located next to the kitchen, as part of the family/home theater room, or set up in the baby's room," noted Jill Notini, spokeswoman for the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers.

Making these moves possible is a growing crop of high-tech clothes washers and dryers boasting dramatic styling and high-efficiency (HE) operation.

State aims to build pillar for economy

The Louisiana Department of Economic Development has a plan for solving the state's housing crisis and creating a new signature industry for Louisiana: Turn the state into a hub for new construction technologies and building methods.

Luring construction-related industries and manufacturing has become a major priority for the state. The idea is that by looking to advanced building methods, the state can more quickly rebuild the 200,000 homes that were damaged or destroyed in Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and give Louisiana workers a leg up on developing modern construction skills.

"We've been working with housing manufacturers of many types and encouraging them to consider investing in Louisiana," said Don Pierson, assistant secretary of economic development and head of the office of business development.

EPC Gen2 Ready and New ``Bad Tag'' Reject

The ID Technology RFID Reject Module can be used with all ID Technology 250 tamp-blow printer applicators.

The 250r, ID Technology's RFID printer applicator, reads, writes and verifies RFID tags prior to printing and dispensing the tag/label onto a tamp pad for automatic application of the tag/label to a case or carton. If the RFID tag cannot be verified, the reject module's plate moves in front of the tamp pad and the "bad" tag/label is blown onto the reject plate, which then returns to the home position. When the RFID plate becomes full of "bad" tags, a beacon is illuminated. An output is also available for customer use.

The IDT 250r printer applicator features the same modular component configuration as the original IDT 250 Series printer applicator, as well as, "hot swap" spare assemblies that install in minutes.

NAHB Publishes Free Booklet on Panelized Construction for Custom ...

WASHINGTON -- In response to the growing interest in panelized construction for custon homes, the Building Systems Councils of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has published a free booket entitled: Panelized Homes: Custom Designs, Your Building Solution.

The full-color, 12-page booklet introduces consumers to energy- and resource-efficient panelized home building, highlighting features and benefits and offering tips for choosing the right type of panelized home.

"In addition to being an excellent resource for consumers, this new publication helps builders explain to their clients the innovative panelized home choices now available," said NAHB President David Pressly, a home builder in Statesville, N.C.

Panelized home building systems combine the best aspects of traditional onsite, stick-built construction with modern technology to deliver a well-designed home in less time.

92,000 still live in campers

Almost 14 months after Hurricane Katrina smashed into the Gulf Coast, about 92,000 Mississippians still call FEMA trailers home.

Now, the federal government is looking for solutions. The government is dangling $400 million in grant money for states that come up with more efficient and cost-effective ways to house disaster victims.

The federal government has spent more than $1 billion on campers for residents in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama displaced by the Aug. 29, 2005, storm.

Mississippi is competing with Florida, Alabama, Louisiana and Texas for a share of the grant money, which will be used to fund a pilot "alternative housing" project. Because of the competitive nature of the grant, no details of the state's plan were available.

John Davison, who has been at the Cajun RV Park in Biloxi since Katrina, said better living conditions should have come up sooner for people living in the cramped, broken and late-arriving trailers.
