A: Oddly enough, even though most of us can't even imagine what it would be like to taste music or smell the color red, those with synesthesia can and do that every day. Just as the word anesthesia means "no sensation," synesthesia means "joined sensation." For some reason, stimulating one sense will trigger perceptions in another sense. For example, a bright light might seem loud, the sound of a bagpipe sour, the color after sex a static silver. No one's quite sure of the cause, but there are a few hypotheses. Some experts think that crossed wires in the brain cause the problem (the path to the taste buds gets hooked up to the sense of hearing path, for example), while others believe it's due to a lack of inhibition (when the natural pathways that squelch irrelevant sensory input just aren't working properly).

ARM Ltd. has signed a development pact with Virginia-based Parallogic Inc., porting Parallogic's StriaEdge software to the ARM11 MPcore processor multicore processor. The pact will expand ARM's presence in residential gateways, particularly those carrying multimedia traffic used by carriers in providing triple-play services. The ARM11 has a 400-Mbit/sec throughput, allowing home networks to carry multiple HDTV streams. Parallogic implements parallel implementations of the TCP/IP protocol stack, allowing more efficient Quality of Service mechanisms in mixed video-voice-data networks. In the MPcore implementation, one core running Linux is dedicated to control-plane operations, while the remaining cores operate on the data plane, operating on packets. .
ARTESIA, N.M. - On a hot afternoon in May, buses carrying people with dreams of a better life rumbled across the desert to a converted Bible college on the edge of this oil town of 12,000. As each bus rolled toward the front gate, a welcome committee came into view: a dozen men and women in sunglasses, broad-brimmed hats and crisp green uniforms, standing ramrod straight. .
Shares of Champion Enterprises Inc. surged nearly 10 percent Wednesday, the day after the manufactured homebuilder narrowly beat Wall Street expectations despite a cool U.S. housing market. The company's third-quarter profit dropped to $9 million, or 12 cents per share, from $16.6 million, or 20 cents per share, last year. But revenue rose 3 percent to $346.5 million, buoyed by a 17 percent jump in modular home sales to $89 million. "We think Champion Enterprises' move toward selling more modular homes is a positive trend given the higher price points and the ability of these homes to hold their value better, which makes modular homes more appealing to consumers," Sidoti & Co. analyst Paul Nouri said Wednesday in a note. The firm also reiterated its "Neutral" rating on the stock and its $8 price target.
In response to complaints from residents of Dixie Ranch Acres who have been upset over a group rehabilitation home for sexual offenders in their neighborhood, county attorney John Cassels has drawn up an ordinance dealing with this issue. The first of two public hearings required before adoption will be held Thursday, Oct. 26, at the meeting of the Okeechobee County Board of County Commissioners. On Oct. 12, the county passed an emergency ordinance concerning the housing of registered sexual offenders. The proposed ordinance to be considered on Oct. 26 is more detailed than the emergency ordinance and deals with revising zoning laws. The proposed ordinance offers specific definitions for community residential homes that are licensed by the state department of health and boarding houses.

Jimmy E. Banner stopped into the Beacon's office last week and dropped off a story idea. He noted with seriousness, “a number of completed projects in the 2006." Banner just wanted to put “the growth of Unicoi County in the limelight of progress." His hope of pointing out the growth in Unicoi is to “entice more business and industry to locate in our area." Early in the year Banner noticed a new Verizon Wireless Cellular Tower on top of Gentry Mountain up behind Flag Pond. A new industry has located in the former modular home plant at the lower end of the Erwin Industrial Park. The new company is called All State Building Systems, and it is a modular home manufacturer as was its predecessor. Impact Plastic's Company has recently added 22,000 square feet to their plant in the Industrial Park.
